Buying a home without an HOA can save you hundreds of dollars and allow you to plant your garden as you like. But you must have tolerance for neighbors who want to paint their home a different color than the one you would prefer.
Avoiding Home Owners Association Fees

Some people want communities that offer amenities like pools, tot lots, and common areas, and others do not. People who avoid communities with home owner's associations usually give one of two reasons: 1) Cost - HOA dues are not tax deductable, and they can add $50 to $500 (and even more) per month to the monthly expense; and 2) HOA Rules/Regulations - HOAs can regulate the color that you paint your home, whether you can put up a fence, and even the plants that you want to put in the yard.

For these reasons, you may decide that you want to shop for a home with no HOA dues. With the money that you save every month, you can buy a membership at the fitness center or YMCA. If you prefer to march to your own drummer and want to live in a community where your neighbors do the same, then you should look for homes where there are no Home Owner's Associations.

PLEASE NOTE: Our No-HOA-Fee lists are only as good as the real estate agent that keyed them into the MLS. If the real estate agent was sloppy or lazy and put into the MLS that there are no known HOA fees, then the home will appear on our list even though the home is in an association. Please understand that we CANNOT and do not guarantee that any particular home does not have an HOA. We will, of course, be happy to confirm whether or not a particular home is or is not within a home owner's association, but you need to ask us the question. In short, please use this list as a starting point in working with us, not an end conclusion.
